Intel's First Try, Four Years Later

Alchemist was Intel's opening move in discrete graphics, and it arrived badly. The drivers were unfinished, older games ran worse than the hardware suggested they should, and reviewers spent more time cataloguing bugs than benchmarking. Intel then spent years fixing it in public, one driver release at a time.

That work paid off. The problem is that it paid off into a product line that no longer exists. Alchemist has been superseded by Battlemage, the A-series cards are out of production, and everything below is now a used-market question rather than a retail one.

So the honest framing for 2026 is not "is the A750 a good budget card." It's narrower and more useful: you are looking at second-hand hardware from a discontinued generation, competing against a new card that is still in production and still getting Intel's attention. That comparison has a real answer, and for most people it isn't the used card.

Here's the full case — what Alchemist genuinely does well now, what still hurts, and the specific conditions under which a used A580, A750 or A770 is the right buy.

  • The line is EOL. A310, A380, A580, A750 and A770 are all discontinued. Every one of them is a used purchase, with whatever that implies for warranty and condition.

1. The Whole Line, on Paper

Before any argument about value, here is what these cards actually are, with both Battlemage cards included for reference. Every figure below is launch MSRP and published specification.

Two things in that table are worth pausing on, because they shape everything that follows.

First, Battlemage is faster, and by more than the spec sheet suggests. On our own performance index the B580 sits above both the A750 and the A770, and the B570 sits above the A580. It does that from a narrower bus and a lower board power, which is the clearest signal that the generational gain was architectural rather than a matter of throwing more silicon at the problem. Anyone still telling you an A750 out-runs a B580 is working from launch-era numbers — including, until recently, an earlier version of this article.

Second, the big Alchemist dies have more memory bandwidth than either Battlemage card. The A580, A750 and A770 all run a 256-bit bus. The B580 runs 192-bit and the B570 runs 160-bit. That's a real Alchemist advantage, and it's why these cards hold up better at higher resolutions than their price tier implies.

The second point is the one hardware advantage Alchemist keeps, and it does not rescue the buying case by itself. The first means the honest argument for the B580 no longer has to work around the speed question — it wins that one, then wins everything else too.

2. What Alchemist Genuinely Does Well Now

Four years of driver work produced a card meaningfully different from the one that launched. These are the areas where that shows.

The media engine is the standout. Every Arc card, right down to the A310, ships hardware AV1 encode via Quick Sync — and Intel's implementation has been widely regarded as the best consumer AV1 encoder since it launched. For a streamer, a video editor, or anyone building a transcode box, this is the reason to look at Arc at all. It is genuinely class-leading silicon on otherwise mid-tier cards.

One correction worth making explicitly, because it appeared in an earlier version of this article: the A750 is not the cheapest route to hardware AV1 encoding, and never was. The A310 and A380 launched at $130 and $139 respectively against the A750's $289, and both carry the same media engine. If AV1 encode is the only thing you want, the small cards do it for a fraction of the price and a fraction of the power. The B570 also undercuts the A750's MSRP while being newer.

XeSS runs best on Arc hardware. Intel's upscaler has two paths: a broadly compatible DP4a version that runs on other vendors' GPUs, and an XMX path that uses Arc's matrix units directly. On an Arc card you get the faster, higher-quality path. It's a real advantage over running FSR on equivalent hardware.

Modern APIs are where the architecture was always strong. Alchemist's problems were never in DirectX 12 or Vulkan — those were competitive from early on. The disasters were in older APIs, which is a different problem with a different fix.

Bandwidth per dollar is excellent. A 256-bit bus at this tier is unusual. Cards like the RTX 4060 and RX 7600 run 128-bit buses; the Arc A750 has double the width. In texture-heavy scenes and at 1440p, that shows.

3. What Still Hurts

None of the following was fixed by drivers, because none of it is a driver problem.

Resizable BAR is a requirement, not an optimisation

This is the one that decides whether you should buy at all.

Intel lists Resizable BAR as a platform requirement for Arc A-series, not an optional optimisation, and independent testing has consistently found the penalty for running without it to be large but highly title-dependent — commonly in the tens of percent, with the worst cases considerably worse.

We are deliberately not quoting a single headline percentage, because there isn't an honest one. The loss varies enormously by game, engine and API. What matters practically is the instruction, not the number: check your motherboard's BIOS for Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory support before you buy, and enable it. If your platform cannot do it, an Arc A-series card is the wrong purchase regardless of how cheap it looks.

Older DirectX titles are better, not solved

Intel rewrote its DirectX 9 handling in a major driver overhaul, and the improvement was substantial. Intel's own figure, published alongside that release, was an average uplift of roughly 40% across the DX9 titles it tested. That is a vendor number for one API on one driver revision — not a measurement of ours, and not a general claim about Arc performance.

The current situation is more nuanced than either "it's fixed" or "it's broken." DX12 and Vulkan are fine. DX11 is much improved but still less consistent than the competition. DX9 and older titles now run acceptably rather than badly. If your library is heavily weighted toward pre-2015 games, Arc remains the riskiest of the three vendors.

Idle power draw

Alchemist draws noticeably more power at idle than competing cards unless the system is configured for it. The fix is platform-side: PCIe Active State Power Management (ASPM) and the associated low-power states need to be enabled in the BIOS, and many boards ship with them off. Get that right and idle draw becomes reasonable. Leave it wrong and the card burns power doing nothing, which matters if the machine is on all day.

Driver overhead on weak CPUs

Arc's drivers carry more CPU-side overhead than NVIDIA's or AMD's equivalents. On a fast processor this is invisible. On an older or lower-end CPU it eats into performance in a way that doesn't show up in reviews conducted on high-end test benches.

There's an uncomfortable interaction here: the platforms most likely to lack Resizable BAR are also the platforms most likely to have a CPU weak enough for driver overhead to bite. The classic "I'll drop a cheap Arc card into my old build" plan runs into both problems simultaneously. Arc rewards a modern platform and punishes an old one, which is precisely backwards from what a budget buyer usually wants.

Power and physical requirements

The A580, A750 and A770 all want two 8-pin connectors and draw 175–225W. The B580 wants one connector and draws 190W. If you're pairing this with a modest or older power supply, the Alchemist cards ask more of it — an easy detail to overlook when the card itself is cheap.

8GB is a real ceiling on the A580 and A750

Both cards carry 8GB. At 1080p that's still workable in most titles. At 1440p with high texture settings, or in newer releases with aggressive asset streaming, it's the constraint you hit first — and no amount of bandwidth compensates for running out of capacity. The A770's 16GB is the only Alchemist answer to this.

4. Card by Card

Arc A310 and A380 — these were never gaming cards and shouldn't be evaluated as ones. What they are is the cheapest hardware AV1 encoder Intel makes, in a low-power package. The Arc A310 draws 30W with no power connector at all, which makes it a genuinely useful transcode or media-server card. As GPUs for playing games, both are entry-level in the literal sense.

Arc A580 — the 256-bit bus and 8GB of the bigger dies at a $179 launch price, with clocks cut back and a 175W draw. It was the value entry point in the line, and it is important to hold that $179 MSRP in mind when evaluating used listings. A used A580 priced near or above its original launch MSRP is not a bargain, however the listing frames it. An earlier version of our A580 coverage described sub-$230 pricing as a good result; against a $179 launch price, it plainly isn't. Anchor to the MSRP, not to the asking price.

Arc A750 — the sweet spot of the Alchemist gaming line. Meaningfully faster than the A580 on our index, same 8GB and same 256-bit bus, at a 225W draw and a $289 launch price. If you want Alchemist for gaming and 8GB is enough for you, this is the card to want.

Arc A770 — the halo part, and the only one with a spec no cheap competitor matches: 16GB on a 256-bit bus at 560 GB/s. That capacity is what keeps it interesting for local AI work and high-texture gaming rather than for frame rates alone. 5. The Decisive Question: Used Alchemist or a New B580?

This is what the whole article comes down to, so let's do it properly rather than gesturing at "get the newer one."

The speed argument is not close, and it does not go the way Alchemist owners tend to assume. Our index has the B580 at 10,659 against the A750's 9,098 — and it gets there on a narrower bus, one power connector and 35W less. The B580 wins on the frame rate and on everything around it:

Read that table honestly and the conclusion follows: you are giving up raw performance, 50% of the VRAM, 35W of efficiency, a connector, the warranty and any knowledge of the card's history — and gaining some memory bandwidth. That is a bad trade at similar money, and it's why "the A750 is still the value king" — which this article previously claimed — no longer holds. The B580 displaced it on the merits, not on a technicality.

So when does the used card actually win?

There are real cases. They're specific.

When the discount is dramatic, not marginal. The retired version of our A580 review suggested buying the newer generation if it was within $40 — an arbitrary threshold that made the advice unusable in practice. The honest version is structural: because you're giving up VRAM, warranty and efficiency, the used card needs to cost substantially less than a new B580, not slightly less. Think "roughly half" rather than "a bit cheaper." Measure that against what a B580 actually sells for today — the live price grid at the end of this article — rather than against its launch MSRP, because the gap between the two is exactly what determines whether the used card has any room to win. Anything short of that and you're paying near-new money for used, discontinued, less-capable hardware.

When you specifically need 16GB. The A770 is the only card here offering it, and no similarly priced new card does. If VRAM capacity is the binding constraint on your workload, this argument overrides everything else.

When you only want the encoder. If the job is AV1 transcoding, buy an A310 or A380 and stop reading. You don't need a gaming card at all.

When your platform is already right. Modern CPU, Resizable BAR enabled, ASPM configured, adequate PSU with two spare 8-pin connectors. If all of that is already true, Alchemist's downsides shrink and the discount is closer to free money.

And when it clearly doesn't

If your motherboard can't do Resizable BAR, if you're on an older CPU, if your PSU is marginal, if you play a lot of older DirectX titles, or if the used price is anywhere near the new price — buy the Arc B580 instead. Or, if the budget is tighter, the Arc B570. In 2026, that is the answer more often than it isn't.

Alchemist deserves more credit than its launch reputation and less than its rehabilitation narrative. Intel took a genuinely poor software situation and fixed most of it in public, and the hardware underneath — a wide memory bus, an outstanding media engine, competent modern-API performance — was always better than the early reviews could show.

But the cards are discontinued, and a used purchase from a dead line has to beat a new card from a live one. On VRAM, power, warranty and driver focus, the Arc B580 wins that comparison. It wins on raw speed too — and speed was never the whole question anyway.

Buy used Alchemist when the specifics justify it: you need the A770's 16GB, or you want an A310/A380 purely as an encoder, or your platform is already ideal and the discount is genuinely steep. Otherwise buy new. That's a less exciting conclusion than "hidden budget king," and it's the one the numbers actually support.
